Pilgrims and Puritans

We celebrate the Pilgrim legacy during the Thanksgiving holiday, but I’m afraid it’s not enough to bring a shine to their tarnished image. We know the Pilgrims and Puritans best for their well rehearsed failings such as Witch Trials, Blue Laws and “The Scarlet Letter.” It was good and right to remember for the Acton community their important contribution towards public education. Protestants and Public Education

The Acton-Boxborough School committee has invited our community to reflect on the religious holidays and the school calendar. Presently, some Jewish and Christian holidays are observed, but local demographics have shifted, reflecting more religious diversity. State law allows School Committees to establish holidays based on the district’s cultural make up. It’s a timely conversation. Continue reading
