Bearing Witness with the Social Justice Task Force
The Social Justice Task Force has heard from several of you who are interested in attending the ICE demonstrations in Burlington. Thank you for your desire to show up and support this cause through peaceful demonstration.
As you discern whether to participate, we invite you to remember that we go as an expression of our baptismal calling—to stand with those caught in systems of oppression and those experiencing fear, grief, and isolation.
We do not go to shout or confront, but to bear quiet, prayerful witness. Our presence is intentionally peaceful and grounded in prayer. We hold in prayer those who are detained and their families, as well as those who work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, trusting that all people are beloved by God.
These gatherings are supported by trained volunteers and clergy, including the Rev. Andrew Harris, who wear high-visibility orange vests. They serve as resources to help keep our focus on the peaceful nature of our witness and remind us that nonviolent action is not passive, but powerful.
If you feel called to live out your baptism through nonviolent love and prayerful presence, we invite you to join us. At the same time, we recognize that public demonstration is not for everyone, and we honor and respect each person’s discernment.
Here are some tips for attending:
● The “Bearing Witness” ICE demonstrations take place every week; however, SJTF attends the protest on the first Wednesday of each month. The next scheduled date is February 4th.
● We meet in the ACC parking lot at 11 AM and carpool together. We also welcome those who wish to meet us in Burlington.
● We return to ACC around 1:30 or so (the demonstration concludes at 1:00, so our arrival back to ACC depends on traffic).
● We each make a sign ahead of time and bring it to hold during the demonstration, although it’s not required (folks have been invited to gather in Rev. Karen’s office at 10:30 to make signs; she always has markers).
● For a sign, foam board is best; it is less flimsy than poster board.
● Signs should be peaceful and focused on faith and/or the principles of due process. The fewer the words, the better.
